What is so different about Utah Rock-Crawling and Off Road Challenge is that all proceeds go towards a good cause. That cause is to keep our recreational roads and trails open. It takes money to counter the advertising and litigation that the environmental groups have used to close recreational areas off to motorized use. Even the Bureau of Land Management has acknowledged that motorized recreation is valid use of public land. The problem is that the groups with money want to shut us out of our public land.

About a year ago, Craig Stumph of Delta Utah wanted to do something about this situation. His plan was to have an organized, legal, rock-crawling event where the proceeds went to help keep our roads and trails open. Thus was born UROC. Craig is the President of Notch Peak Desert Dogs 4x4 Club, avid equal access activist and Rock Crawling competitor.

From Craig:
"UROC was organized to raise money for charity/land access groups. As you know, environmental groups have been organized for years. Their well financed lawsuits have closed millions of acres of public land to Americans. UROC's Goal is to provide money to charity/land access groups to fight lawsuits initiated by environmental groups. These extreme environmentalists solicit monies from the East Coast to close Western land!"

The first UROC event was held near Cedar City Utah at the Three Peaks OHV area on May 26th 2001. Three Peaks had been used previously by ARCA (American Rock Crawlers Association). The event drew a few seasoned ARCA competitors but mostly was geared towards the average hard core rock crawler that felt the ARCA series was more than they wanted to commit to. Or to see if they had what it takes to compete in ARCA. Even ARCA promoters came to compete and help sponsor this event. Don’t be fooled about how the course was set. Some of the course was the same as ARCA had set up and one section was said to be even tougher.

Creighton King and spotter Brett Davis on #6

This Bummer driven by Aaron Clough gets some big time air!

With spectators estimated in the thousands, crowd control became an unanticipated problem. Wanting a better view, judges and helpers were kept busy, keeping folks out of potentially hazardous areas. All of the UROC officials knew that the event had become a major success early on, since these folks had paid to be there. Spectator fees went to improve the Three Peaks OHV area and to Utah Shared Access Alliance (USA-ALL).

Scoring was much the same as ARCA with only a few minor differences. Safety was foremost in the minds of all the officials. One new rule had the spotter handling the winch hook with a strap to prevent fingers from being spooled in with the cable. Failure was a 100 point addition. Like in golf, the lowest score wins.

The father and son team of Nate and father Brent Christensen was their first event. Nate is at the wheel.

Curt Hildebrand's spotter has his hands full on #3

First place went to Todd Little with a stretched flat fender. Todd is from St. George Utah and had never competed before. Way to go Todd!

Todd Little #7 showing his winning form on course #3

Mike Weaver Showing the crowd how it is done

Second place went to Mike Weaver with Sniper #005. Mike is a seasoned ARCA competitor who knows how to drive and has a machine to back him up!

Third place went to Brandon Dawson from SLC who put on a show with his CJ6.

Congratulations to all the rest of the competitors.
