Day 2 by Jean Akens
with photos from Carmen Hill, Charlie Freeman, Ellie Lincoln and Bob Stuckey
Early morning was spent touring the town, visiting Boot Hill, the O.K. Corral and other famous Tombstone landmarks. Also on the agenda was a "characteristic" Frenchie tour of the back alleys. The Tribe then headed to Bisbee.
A visit to the Silver Queen
mine in Bisbee entertained the group mid-day. Everyone donned mining gear (including
water-proof slickers, hard hats and thick belts with lights and battery pack), before
straddling a narrow rail car that carried the "miners" to a depth of 1500
horizontal feet into the bowels of the earth. Lunch at a health food cafe in Bisbee (which
Frenchie swore nearly killed him) was followed by an uninterrupted run to Douglas and the
border crossing into Aqua Prieta, in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico.
Much "paper shuffling" had to be completed before the vehicles were allowed into the country. (NOTE: Take duplicates of all licenses and vehicle registration papers; we had to find a place to make copies.)
"I knew it was a Fukarwe run when it took two women to run the copy machine at the border crossing restaurant" Charlie Freeman
Camp was made alongside a wide - though nearly dry - river, between Aqua Prieta
and Nogales (not THE Nogales that straddles the Arizona/Mexico border in
Sonora, but a smaller town of the same name).
Continuing the theme of the Fukarwes, much time was spent trying to
decide where to camp. Everyone finally agreed it was "all right" to open a gate
and go through a fence to follow a trail down the steep, rocky bank to the river. (NOTE:
It was later learned that all river easements are owned by the Mexican government, and
that camping beside them is permitted.) Several Mexican families had spent the day
picnicking in the shade of the cottonwoods that lined the river, but they soon left. Maybe
the sight of a large group of crazy, laughing Gringos scared them away. A delicious
dinner was prepared by "chef' La Chance at his well-equipped chuckwagon, before the
Touring Tribe settled in for their first night "somewhere in Mexico" (no one
knew exactly where we were, a common occurrence throughout the trip, especially where
detailed maps were lacking.) But we were finally in Mexico and that relieved much
tension. A coyote chorus howled their welcome as everyone drifted off to sleep.
