Charlie's Bronco wouldn't start again. Brad took the starter apart and repaired it sufficiently to get him going. Most of the group then took a two hour guided walking tour of Alamos with "Pepe," who had hustled us for the job the evening before. The colonial structures were impressive, (especially one that was in the process of being restored), the Museo Costumbrista de Sonora (museum of the region), and the many side streets and abandoned buildings were quite interesting, but it was hot and the tour long for those anxious to hit the four-lane and head up the coast toward the border.
We stopped for a late lunch in Navajoa, situated on Mexican Highway 15, the major artery from Nogales to Mazatlan and beyond. In Ciudad Obregon another break was necessary, while Charlie visited the Ford garage for a new starter. It felt strange to be back in a world of car dealerships, fast-food chains and 70-mile per hour highways. Talk about culture shock!
San Carlos, a planned, tourist-oriented community on the Sea of Cortez was reached at dusk. In the hot, sultry ocean air we wearily made camp, grabbed a bite to eat and soon retired - joined by bugs of all kinds who were anxious to share the bed rolls of those sleeping outside.
