Day 1 by Jean Akens
with photos from Carmen Hill, Charlie Freeman, Ellie Lincoln and Bob Stuckey
It was a typical Fukarwe Touring Tribe run. That became quickly apparent after the group of six four-by-fours and eleven people met up in Benson, AZ to head toward the Mexican border. Why typical? Because when trip planner Frenchie La Chance of Ramona, CA, said, "I think if we take this side street it will meet up with the main road heading south," most everyone followed - and the group soon ended up in a residential cul-de-sac.
"Fukarwe! Fukarwe!" everyone chanted, leaning out their vehicle windows, arms waving, as we turned the group (which included two jeeps with camp trailers) and headed back to the center of town to find the correct road. Yes, the trip began in typical fashion - and the remaining thirteen days in Mexico never changed the pattern.
"I knew it was a Fukwwe run when we were lost three times
before we even entered Mexico." Brad Morrison
The loosely-organized group, each individual sporting logo T-shitts, consisted of: Frenchie La Chance, Ann Mogart, Carmen Hill, Charlie Freeman, Bob Stuckey and Ellie, all from California; Curley Bishop, Don Beck and Beverly of Arizona; Brad Morrison from Colorado and myself, Jean Akens, from Moab, Utah. Four-wheeling enthusiasts all, we had gathered to share in this first "International" run of the Fukarwe Touring Tribe.
Since arrival in Tombstone was late, we decided to have dinner in the historic western town, before finding a place to camp. Although some of us doubted Frenchie's memory of a special restaurant known for its ribs, we found the place with no problem.
Dinner at "Old Cuss" was raucous. Anticipation over the unknown facing us in the remote, rugged Barranca del Cobre (Copper Canyon)/Sierra Madre section of Mexico was mixed with the happiness of reunion with old friends and the forming of new friendships. For some reason (were we too loud in our excitement, perhaps?) we were put in a separate dining room, complete with 1800s-decor stage. We even had our own floorshow - provided by the less inhibited of the Fukarwes. An evening stroll along the main street of Tombstone concluded the evening.
