Own
a 2 WD sport ute, pickup or minivan? Treat yourselves to some easy
backroad driving on this three-day getaway. Follows some of the same
routes as Land of Volcanoes, but eliminates the 4WD and
high clearance sections.
The
Journey begins on the volcanic tableland north of Bishop. We'll
travel across volcanic avalanche on an easy dirt road that was once the old
stage and freight road from Bishop to Benton, and explore ancient Indian
petroglyphs along the way.
We'll cross the Benton Range and stop for lunch at Hot Creek, an active geothermal area. Our bedroom will be the town of Mammoth Lakes and your choice of either camping or local motel.
Sunday includes a visit to Mono Lake, and an optional guided canoe tour. An optional shuttle bus/hiking excursion into Devil's Postpile National Monument is available Monday.
Tour itineraries depend on weather conditions and Sierra snowpack. Both
start in Bishop and end in Mammoth Lakes. Driving to Bishop the night
before is highly recommended.

WHO: Anyone with a fully insured street legal 2WD or 4WD sport ute, pickup or minivan with reasonable ground clearance. First timers encouraged.
