TRIP LEADER: Harry Lewellyn
This 12-day expedition is designed for stock sport-utility vehicles. It is
an adventure, not a technical challenge.
WHAT: One cannot begin to describe the adventure and magnitude of Barranca del Cobre - Copper Canyon. It’s Mexico’s Grand Canyon, only it’s deeper by a football field and claimed to be six times longer! It reached Norte Americano popularity via its train. It's rumored the "world's most scenic railroad" is the only way through, and maps seem to confirm it. Traditional travelers enjoy the spectacle from the window of their Pullman. The most adventurous do it for real ... in 4WD!
We start in Bisbee, Arizona, and finish in Tucson. We then make a one-night layover in Nuevo Casas Grandes, Mexico. Given an early arrival, we'll explore the ruins for which the town is famous - Paquime. One more day puts us in Creel, where we'll marvel at the Tarahumara Indians living in caves, the Mushroom Rocks and Horseshoe Lake, and shop for rare, one-of-a-kind trinkets. Then the real adventure begins. We take on majestic Divisadero, head for Cerocauhi for two days and a unique side trip to canyon’s bottom at Urique! The trail roughens and takes us to Temoris for an indescribable panorama of the train. From beyond, we ford the Chinipas River and say good-bye to conventional civilization. The primitive pueblo of Agua Caliente will certainly be the highlight for some as we drop off toys and clothes for the local children and adults. On our final night away from civilization we camp, or should I say we luxuriate, at a hacienda complete with showers and real toilets! Then it's off to the quaint colonial town of Alamos for two nights in supreme luxury. This is the most adventurous public, 4WD expedition offered in Mexico!
