Cabo Caper, Baja 4WD Tour

TRIP LEADER: Harry Lewellyn

Day 1: We will meet in San Ysidro (A2, north side of Baja map coordinates) and be rolling across the Tijuana border by 7:30 a m We'll get our tourist cards validated and move south to our first night's destination, the La Pinta hotel in Catavina (G3).

Day 2: The La Pinta, Oasis or maybe the Presidente Hotel in Loreto (e4 south side of Baja map coordinates) is our destination on day two. Given time, the San Ignacio (a3) mission and museum or the museum in Santa Rosalia (b4) are likely attractions along the way.

Day 3: We move south via either dirt to the San Javier mission (e4) or all paved road, both leading past Ciudades Insurgentes (e3) and Constitucion (f3) to Magnalena Bay (g3) for one or two nights camping. The length of stay depends on how we like it. I suspect we'll find Magnalena rather sparse, windy, cold, Pacific-Coast-like and move out the next day.

Day (4), 5, 6: From Magnalena, we use paved roads (Mex 1 and Mex 19) farther south, through Todos Santos (k4) and take the dirt road southeast to the pavement (back to Mex 1), past the airport (k/14/5), then more dirt out to the coast and northeast to Cabo Pulmo (k5). With a couple of days camping, we'll have time, and are close enough, to run into Cabo San Lucas (14) for lunch one day. Showers are available at a nearby dive camp, too.

Day 7: We now start our trek north, via some dirt, then pavement, to La Paz (h/j4/5), for a quickie layover and cleanup.

Day 8, 9: An early departure this morning will allow plenty of time to find our way to Punta Evarjsto (g4/5) for two nights camping. The second day could be used to explore Mission Dolores del Sur (f/g4).

Day 10, 11: Once again, on day 10, we bite off unknown dirt routes northwest to Ciudad Constitucion (f3), then pavement north to Conception Bay (c4) for two nights camping.

Day 12: Civilization rears its bleak face as we head for a hotel in Guerrero Negro (L3) for one night. If the dollars work out right, I'll provide a group dinner that night at Enrique Achoy's Malarrimo Restaurant.

Day 13, 14: South on Mex 1 to the El Arco (13/4) turnoff, then dirt east, then north at what the Auto Club used to call the worst grade in Baja, La Questa de la Ley (14), takes us to Las Animas (K4/5) for a couple of nights camping. If we add a day to the trip (as I've suggested), this is where I recommend we stay.

Day 15: Time's a drawin' near for Baja withdrawal as we use dirt to LA Bay (J/K4) and then the pavement (as they call it) west to Mex 1 north. At about Laguna Chapala (H3/4), we turn east, and via dirt, rumble our way north to Puertecitos (G4) for lunch and a peek at the hot springs. 50 paved miles more north puts us in Las Misiones hotel in San Felipe (E4/5) for our last night in Baja.

Day 16: The Laguna Hansen/Tecate route home was the preference at the dinner meeting. The advantage is a painless border crossing at Tecate (B3) and I'm in favor of anything that avoids Tijuana and Mexicali on the weekends.

Camping versus hotel surnmary: 10 nights camping, 5 nights hotels.
