WHAT:
Let Baja introduce herself with an easy, all-hotel trip midway down the
mysterious peninsula for one of Mother Nature's most spectacular treats -- the
California gray whales of Scammon's Lagoon. Mother Nature rewards us with
close-ups of her largest mammal. They'll show us their tails, splash us with
breaches, spy hop to check us out or simply reveal their hear-shaped breathing
pattern! Scammon's Lagoon is the winter breeding and calving grounds for these
50-foot wonders, which means newborns too!
We'll put Tijuana and Ensenada far behind as we admire saguaro-like cardones, the cirio or boojum trees or the ever-flourishing elephant tree. Time allowing, we may visit the cave paintings nearby our first night at the La Pinta Hotel at Catavina. As we settle into the Baja way, it's only a short jaunt from there to our home for the next three days in Guerrero.
Allowing that the winds can rearrange our schedule, we'll plan for a brief tour of the salt works, then board our whale-watching pangas for the experience of a lifetime. We'll also visit the old pier near town and by day five, we'll be as at home shopping the mercados as the locals. But it's off to Ensenada to share our whale tales at Hussong's Cantina and other touristy spots.

FEE: $795 per vehicle (one or two people) includes hotels, whale boat, cave paintings and group dinner. $954 for late reservations. Deposit: $300
EQUIPMENT: Limit to 13 vehicles.
