Roger Vargo has been a connoisseur of California's backroads for more than 20 years. Exploring first by foot and motorcycle, and latter by automobile and sport utility vehicle, he has developed an understanding and appreciation of both backroads and the history that connects them to the present. He is a rated leader with the Sierra Club and an amateur radio operator (N6YDT).
Since 1988, Roger has written the "Vargo's Variety" column: researched, planned and now leads the popular Mojave Expedition and Indian Rock Art college trips: and also conducts "...by God, to Bodie!", "Kernville Kaper," "Fat Hill Fandango," "Pieta Passage," Monache Meanderings," "Land of Volcanoes," and "Ghost Town Express" tours. The Coyote says, "Roger literally leaves no stone unturned. His attention to detail is outstanding. Roger's knowledge and interpretation of local history makes his tours more enjoyable, and certainly more educational, for everyone." Roger says, "It's more fun to learn the how and why of dirt roads in the first place. Exploring the history of a road can be as much an adventure as actually driving the road." Look for him in the backcountry driving a burgundy S-10 Blazer in the company of his wife, Cecile, and doggie friends Jessie and Jake.
