Kern River Jamboree
Sequoia National Forest & El Paso Mountains
Kernville/Lake Isabella, CA - Oct. 3-4, 1997
The Southern Sierra Nevada mountains and Kern River Valley form an uniquely beautiful area with the combination of lush forests and arid desert, flowing rivers, magnificent lakes, mountain peaks and rustic ranch lands. These mountain and desert characteristics, provide a full range of challenging four wheeling terrain: sand washes, ravines, rock, trees, mud and water, and breathtaking rugged mountain trails.
The Kern River Jamboree begins in Ridgecrest at the Heritage Inn about 120-miles from Los Angles at the foot of the El Paso Mountains where Highways 14 and 395 combine. After a hearty breakfast on Friday morning, we depart for a full two days of activity exploring trails around Lake Isabella and Kernville.
Kern River Valley's rich history includes Indians, gold miners, bandits and cow punchers. And with the exception of the bandits that inhabited Freeman Junction and Robber's Roost, we expect to see plenty of traces of Indians, miners and ranchers. At the Kern River Jamboree you'll see Indian petraglyphs, explore a historic mining tunnel, see an old mining camp, and enjoy a memorable man-mountain steak dinner at one of the finest dining spots in the West - the steak from beef cattle grown at a nearby ranch.
Tentative sites include Mt. Sherman Peak, the El Paso and Piute Mountains, Claraville Flats, Monache and Kennedy Meadows, Kelso Valley, Last Chance Canyon, Chimney Peak and the infamous Sherman 4x4 Trail. Kernville has many local recreational and special interest attractions the fall. Lodging is limited. Plan to register early for best motels, camping available. Trail ratings: 4-5 on a 10 point scale.
