Summary: The 4 rated historic Hole in the Rock trail is among the most remote and challenging in the country.
Location: The Hole in the Rock trail is about 150 miles from Moab. Take Highway 191 south to just past Blanding and then take Highway 95 to the west. At the junction with Highway 176 turn left and follow Highway 176 toward Hall's Crossing. The Hole in the Rock trail head is just on the west side of the small airport around 10 miles short of Hall's Crossing. The trail itself is 30 miles each way for a total of 60 miles before getting back to asphalt.
Scenery: The sea of weathered sandstone provides never ending variety. An overlook of the Great Bend of the San Juan River is impressive. Lake Canyon is interesting. But most interesting is the trail itself especially when the history behind it is studied before taking the trip. The book "HOLE IN THE ROCK" by David E. Miller is highly recommended reading before making the trip.

The Trail: This "shortcut" from Escalante to
Bluff, Utah was supposed to take the Morman Pioneers 6 weeks to open, but it took 6 months
including a very bitter Utah winter. Even in a 4WD it takes the better part of a day each
way. The "Chute" shown at the left is the most famous obstacle on the trail.
The rough stuff begins near Lake Canyon.
Challenges abound on this trail. Weathered sandstone can be seen
in the background.
