Summary: The 3 rated 3-D trail explores colorful canyon bottoms and rims on an enjoyable, picturesque, family 4-wheeling trail.

Location: The trail tours the colorful Hidden Canyon, Lunar Canyon, and Brink Spring north of Highway 313 and west of Hwy 191. The trail head is about 14 miles north of Moab on Highway 191 (about 4 miles north of the intersection with highway 313) near mile marker 141.

mt3d1i.jpgScenery: The Entrada Sandstone rock formations here are a unique combination of smooth red and white layers. The slickrock areas are composed of the white layer that caps the Entrada. The views of the bold relief from the bottom, middle, and top give this trail its 3-D name.

The Trail: A few hills have been known to challenge some stock 4WDs. These include Airport Hill, the Wall and Mean Hill all of which will benefit from some reduced tire pressure. The road surface includes two-track dirt, sandy wash bottoms, a little slickrock and a few ledges.

Jeep Safari Trail Report

Sunday, March 23, 1997

It was another beautiful day in Moab as we lined up for the 3D trail across from the Chamber of Commerce on Highway 191. John Sensenbrenner lead our group to the base of Airport View Hill where everyone aired their tires down.

Trail Leader, John Sensenbrenner, tops Airport View Hill. Several stock SUVs were stirring up the dust with their spinning tires at this point.

One of the mostly dry wash bottoms that are part of the trail. These ranged from very dry sand to a few wet and somewhat muddy spots.

Lunch was at an impressive overlook of of the breathtaking Hidden Canyon.

Not long after lunch the assent to Mean Hill begins on rough slick rock. If you're looking for some good obstacles, this is where the fun begins.

Near the top of the slickrock is the "Wall". It looks much steeper head on than it does here but no vehicles in our group had any trouble with it.

Mean Hill is loose dirt with steep drop-offs on both sides. There are two steep sections with a flatter section in between. Just before the top it gets rutted and uneven. Several vehicles had to make multiple attempts to make it up that section.

A view of Mean Hill from the other side of the Canyon.

The scenic view of Hidden Canyon from a short side trip on the way out. The whole trip is worth it just for this view.

Despite some problems keeping a rental jeep running, our group was back on the pavement by 4:00 p.m.
