The First Annual Alaska Jamboree was a
resounding success and future Alaska Jamborees are almost assured. All facets of the event
were separately enjoyable, but taken together produced an experience unique to our largest
state.
Headquarters was the Mother Lode Lodge on a typical unpaved (but maintained) Alaska road near Mint Glacier and Independence Mine State Park. The owners and staff made our comfort their mission. The food and service was superb.
Trails were selected to show off the territory around Anchorage, Palmer and Wassilla to their best advantage. The views were spectacular, especially the Matanuska and Knik Glaciers. Wildflowers were still in abundance and it was late enough in the season for the famous Alaskan mosquitos to be absent (mostly).
Entertainment was provided by a group of Alaskan Native Americans representing at least three of the major Indian groups in the state. They preformed story-telling songs accompanied by authentic drumming on handmade instruments. Other entertainment was provided by the opportunity to shop and sightsee in the area towns and to take a direct tour to the glaciers by modified (for clearance) tundrabuggie jeeps.
