Although I give many talks and have written many articles about being prepared when in the back country, this time I'd like to let this "photo-essay" bring it all together for you. It may take some time to download, so be patient!

![]() 7. to install bigger tires for more ground clearance,

![]() 8. to do tougher trails, |
![]() 9. in all types of weather, |
![]() 10. or kept your vehicle stock to enjoy the scenic back country byways, |
![]() 11. that allow long vistas, |
![]() 12. or close-up views of wildflowers... |
![]() 13. No matter if you have a long wheelbase rig, |
![]() 14. or short wheelbase, |
![]() 15. you will need to have the proper equipment to be self-reliant. You might have purchased a winch, a heavy duty winch bumper, and mounted a Hi-Lift jack on it, |
![]() 16. installed dual batteries and a heavy alternator...

![]() 17. You bought the winch accessory kit,
|
![]() 18. carry a good assortment of 3/4 or 7/8 inch D-shackles,
|
![]() 19. and the Hi-Lift Jack accessory kit, |
![]() 20. and learned how to set up the jack |
![]() 21. including how to rig the chain safely. |
![]() 22. A good set of tire chains that are easy to install when in the deep... |
![]() 23. You carry the basic tools you know how to use for repairs, |
![]() 24. spare lubes, hoses, belts, tire fix-it, wheel bearings, u-joint, extra oil, |
![]() 25. air, fuel filters and tune-up parts..and duct tape...

![]() 26. a good recovery strap or two, |
![]() 27. a good portable anchor like this Pull-Pal.

![]() 28. You never know when you might need a yank! |
![]() 29. The best thing to bring along is a buddy to help guide over the rocks,
|
![]() 30. and check out the stream depth (or mud hole). |
![]() 31. Watch your ground clearance on the rocks, |
![]() 32. be aware of tire placement, |
![]() 33. especially where the "little-ones" are concerned. |
