Offroad Final Gear Ratios work best from 50:1 to 80:1, depending on tire size and engine size. For a smaller engine and a larger tire size, the HIGHER ratio (80:1) is desired. Just the opposite for a larger engine and smaller tires (50:1).
With automatic transmissions the need for lower reduction is often not as great as that of vehicles with manual transmissions because the torque converter almost doubles the torque output. But on down hill trails the lower range helps the automatic transmission Jeeps need much less braking.
